The Tarka Line passes through some beautiful Devonian scenery between Exeter and Barnstaple. The section we’re focusing on for this walk passes between two of the villages found within it – Yeoford and Copplestone. Our walk is roughly 3.5 miles in length. It’s about a 30 min drive from Bowerland (see map).
Directions
The starting point for this walk is Yeoford Station. Once you are ready to set off, take the footpath under the bridge alongside the railway line. When you can, cross the river and keep following the path as it passes between fields.
After some time you will reach the hamlet of Penstone. Keep going and pass underneath the railway bridge, before crossing over the two tracks and heading in the direction of Colebrook.
Once you reach Colebrook why not take a moment to have a little breather or picnic, enjoying the sights and scenery of mid-Devon. When you are ready to continue, head to the Church and pass through the gate into Drunkard’s Lane. Stay on this path as it crosses over the South Devon railway again. Keep heading on this lane as it takes you to Coleford. Here you will find the New Inn, a 13th century pub, which is perfect for a little refreshment stop!
Continue along the same path as it takes you past Copplestone House and into the village of Copplestone itself. Here you will find a brilliantly-named pub – the Devonshire Dumpling! Take some time to look around the village shop if desired, before completing the final hundred metres or so north of the village centre to find the station you started from.
