Lydford Gorge is owned by the National Trust and as such, warrants an entrance fee. It is the deepest Gorge in the South West and is set in glorious woodland. Parts of the walk can be quite treacherous, so it is not for the fainthearted! It takes approximately 1.5 – 3 hours (depending on which route you take).
Two Entrances
There are entrances each end of the Gorge. I normally park up at the main entrance near Lydford village where there are also shops and toilets. Walk along the upper side of the valley, signposted to the waterfall. You have a choice: there are 2 walks you can do, there is a long and easy walk or a short and steep walk. I prefer the long and easy walk, especially if I have my dog with me.
There is much more to see on the long walk and I never like to challenge myself too much on a walk. After all, isn’t walking all about relaxing? That’s the way I look at it. Part of the way along the walk, there is a lovely little cafe, where you can stop to refresh and drink a welcome cuppa before moving on.
White Ladies Waterfall
The waterfall is beautiful, and is renowned for its picturesque quality. Once you have arrived at the White Ladies Waterfall you will follow the path along the length of the gorge to the spectacular Devil’s Cauldron. There are hand rails along the way as the rocks are often slippery. Be extra careful if you have a dog on lead that pulls!
