Call it what you like, choose the particular form of words that apply to you, but I strongly believe that our lives are made up of both light and dark. We may want life to always be a bed of roses, full of good times, laughter and joy, but we would most likely become bored and complacent… eventually.
Balance
So, we all have a fixed idea of how life should be. Yet sometimes life throws us a curved ball. Just when we were beginning to settle into a period of calmness and contentedness, along comes something to spoil it. I call these the dark moments when the unexpected happens.
Integrate the whole
Self honesty is of course important, maybe we treated others unfairly in the past and it is being mirrored back to us to be integrated. But this is not something to beat yourself up about. Just a quiet sense of ownership, taking responsibility, applying forgiveness and embracing the whole. This leads to greater compassion for oneself and others.
Attitude
For me it is always about my attitude to what is happening. Sometimes I go into a downward spiral of feeling sorry for myself. Instead of just concentrating on the negative, I try to think of something good instead. And it is surprising how things can be turned around.
Gratitude always helps
In previous weeks we looked at gratitude and how it brings a sense of value and appreciation back into our lives. One way I do this is by using a journal, and in particular, a gratitude journal. Be grateful for all the good things that you come across, each and every day. And when you are stopped in your tracks by something you perceive as being negative, think about how you can turn it into a positive. There is always another side to the situation, another path you can take. You just need to be imaginative and creative.
Give it a go, and see how you get on
Value all aspects of your life, turn your negatives into positives and explore how you perceive any given situation. Talk it through with a trusted friend or partner, if that works better for you. It is surprising how you can change your levels of appreciation and create solutions to situations you previously perceived as roadblocks.
