Putsborough Sands

Putsborough Sands

Arguably the most beautiful beach in the area, Putsborough Sands is a must-see attraction of North Devon at any time of year. This week’s blog explores the beautiful beach of Putsborough sands situated between the picturesque Croyde and Woolacombe on the North Devon coast, just under an hour’s drive from Okehampton.

A haven for surfers enjoying the waves, this beach is well-loved in the area by dogs and dog owners alike. The walk itself is very simple. Start at one end of the beach, walk to the other end, which is approximately 2 miles away, and back again. Sometimes the best walks can be the simplest!

Ample Amenities

At both ends of the beach there are ample amenities including lots of all day parking, washing stations, toilets and cafes. Putsborough sands was voted best beach by Trip Advisor in both 2015 and 2016 so why not come and experience the stunning coastline for yourself. Thanks to a headland known as Baggy Point, Putsborough is the only beach in the area to have some protection from south and southwesterly winds, so you can enjoy your walk without being battered by the weather on a typical day.

Dogs welcome all year round

Unlike many beaches, dogs are welcome all year round, with only a small area of the beach being off-limits to them. The beach itself is a huge expanse of sand so you can keep an eye on your dog should you want to let them off lead. When the tide is at the right level the sea is shallow enough for you and your dogs to paddle, or venture in further if you’re feeling brave!

There is lots of opportunity to hire a surfboard and get involved with the most popular activity in the area. Why not be adventurous and book in a surfing lesson or two whilst you’re visiting? The beaches of North Devon have so much to offer.

Fish ‘n Chips

A large portion of fish and chips has to be the best end to a fun day at the beach. On the way back to Okehampton why not visit the one of the best fish and chip shop in the area – Squires in Braunton to sample some locally caught fish.
