Magpie Bridge

Magpie Bridge crosses the River Walkham, which is a family-friendly swimming spot. We normally start with a short walk downstream along the small path beside the fast flowing and very attractive river. It takes around 1.5 hrs – a moderate to easy walk. It’s about a 30 minute drive from Bowerland (Map).

Places for Dogs to Swim

There are a couple of spots along the river where dogs can swim out into the wider areas to retrieve sticks. You can also go up the steep rough track from the car park, then bear right and follow the track down to the river.

Picnic Area

If you cross over the bridge and turn right, you can follow a number of paths and tracks back along, keeping the river on your right hand side. Near the car park, there is a large flat area for picnics or games and sometimes even a barbecue. Alternatively, you can walk in a loop up around the railway viaduct and then down to the river and back up. There are variety of choices on this walk.

Directions

Coming from Okehampton, take the Tavistock road (A386) and turn right at Grenofen, opposite the Half Way House pub. Take the first left, go over the cattle grid and park up.
